How to Save Money on Home Insurance

Home insurance is an important part of protecting your most valuable investment: Your home! Home insurance also protects your belongings—electronics, furniture and family heirlooms—from loss or damage.

And though home insurance is an important purchase, you can still find a comprehensive policy for a price that won’t stretch your wallet. The Insurance Information Institute, an independent insurance resource for consumers, recommends doing the following:

Shopping around.
There are a myriad of insurance companies and brokers out there, all of which sell similar home insurance policies for different prices. But don’t waste time flipping through the Yellow Pages to contact four or five agents—shop online here—and receive multiple insurance quotes from local agents.

Taking advantage of discounts.
You may be eligible for an array of discounts which can lower your home insurance premium. Be sure to ask prospective home insurance agents about discounts for:

Buying multiple policies through the same insurer (like home and auto)

Living within 15 miles of a fire station

Installing electronic burglar alarms

Installing multiple smoke detectors

Updating plumbing and heating equipment

Increasing your deductible.
The higher your deductible—the amount you pay on a claim before the insurance company takes over—the lower your premium will drop. Just remember to select a deductible you can afford; you don’t want to break the bank if you need to file a claim.

Making routine home repairs.
Invest some time, money and elbow grease into making repairs to your roof, plumbing and heating systems and the like. It will reduce the chances of an in-home catastrophe, and your agent will reward you by lowering your premium.

Maintaining good credit.
Many homeowners are surprised to learn about the correlation between insurance rates and their credit history. And while some states are questioning whether or not to throw credit rating out of the premium-determining bucket, right now, it’s still a widespread practice. So pay those bills in full and on time!

You’ve got the tips—now start saving!

Now that you’re armed with the proper insurance saving artillery, you’re ready to start shopping. You can start here by entering your zip code into our quote box. You’ll receive free home insurance quotes from local agents, allowing you to compare policy types and premium prices and pick the policy that best fits your needs.

You are Teenager, You see Red and blue lights flashing in your rear-view mirror, you are being pulled over by the Chicago Cops. What should you do

Do Not Panic No matter how long you’ve been driving, being pulled over by the cops will probably freak you out. In most cases, it’s for speeding, a traffic violation, expired plates, or something like a burned-out headlight. Sure, it’s usually not good news, but it happens. So just stay calm

Move to the Right Side of the Road Don’t stop in the middle of the road, don’t pull to the left - the right side of the road is the safest place for both you and the cop. Go there

Get Your Stuff Together The cop will ask you for your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. This would not be a good time to try and remember where this stuff is. Keep it handy, like in the glove compartment or your wallet

Simply Stay in Your Car If you get out of the car, the cop might see that as a threat, and trust me, you don’t want to go down that road. Stay put - the cop will come to you. You should only get out of the car if the cop asks you to. If they think you’ve been drinking, they may ask you to take a sobriety test or use a Breathalyzer. Just do what you’re asked to do

Do Not Pick a Fight The cop will tell you why you were pulled over. Okay, so maybe the cop will be obnoxious and say something like, “Do you know what you just did?” or “Do you know how fast you were going?” while shining a flashlight in your face. This is not the time to start arguing. Just answer the questions as truthfully as you can

Do Not Cry Seriously, the cop won’t be any more sympathetic if you start sobbing uncontrollably. Forget all of the urban legends you’ve heard - this is not a good way to try and avoid a ticket

Do Not Be Afraid to Suck Up There’s a fine line between being respectful and sucking up - cross it! Refer to the cop as “officer” when speaking, and be meek. One whiff of attitude from you, and you’re toast

Did I say to Stay in the Car After the cop gathers your license and everything, he or she will go back and sit in the cop car with the lights flashing for what seems like an eternity. It’s actually only a few minutes while they run your info through the computer. So just chill already

Take the Ticket and be on Your Way Whatever your ticket is for, take it and move on. If you don’t agree with it, you have the right to dispute it in traffic court. And once you’re on the road, don’t let the fact that you’re pissed off be an excuse for driving like an idiot. You could get pulled over again. It happens

Professional thieves can steal any car, but make them work for yours. To prevent thefts, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) recommends “Layered Protection.” The more layers of protection on your vehicle, the more difficult it is to steal. The number of layers your vehicle needs varies depending on your vehicle and geographic location. Your budget and personal preferences should determine which anti-theft device is best for you.Layer #1 - Common Sense An unlocked vehicle with a key in the ignition is an open invitation to any thief, regardless of which anti-theft device you use. The common sense approach to protection is the simplest and most cost-effective way to thwart would-be thieves.

You should always secure your vehicle, even if parking for brief periods by:

Removing your keys from the ignition

Locking your doors

Closing all your windows

Parking in a well-lit area

Layer #2 - Warning Device The second layer of protection is a visible or audible device which alerts thieves that your vehicle is protected. Popular second layer devices include:

Audible alarms

Steering wheel locks

Steering column collars

Brake locks

Wheel locks

Theft deterrent decals

Identification markers in or on vehicle

Window etching

Laminated glass

Layer #3 - Immobilizing Device The third layer of protection is a device which prevents thieves from bypassing your ignition and hot-wiring the vehicle.

Some electronic devices have computer chips in ignition keys. Other devices inhibit the flow of electricity or fuel to the engine until a hidden switch or button is activated.

Popular third layer devices include:

Smart keys

High security locks & keys

Fuse cut-offs

Kill switches

Starter, ignition and fuel disablement

Layer # 4 - Tracking Device The final layer of protection is a tracking device which emits a signal to a police or monitoring station when the vehicle is reported stolen. Tracking devices are very effective in helping authorities recover stolen vehicles.

Passive and active anti-theft devices are the two options available when considering an anti-theft system. Passive devices automatically arm themselves when the vehicle is turned off, the ignition key removed, or a door is shut. No additional action is required. Active devices require some independent physical action before they are set, such as pushing a button, or placing a “lock” over a vehicle component part. This physical action must be repeated every time the anti-theft device is set or it will not function.
